Lawmakers probe regulators and industry leaders about how data centers operate

As Texas confronts decades of water mismanagement and growing demands for electricity from data centers, the state’s top utility regulator, Public Utility Commission Chairman Thomas Gleeson, told a state House committee on Thursday that it’s critical to have a clear picture of how much water data centers use.

His testimony came as data center developers assured the House Committee on State Affairs that newly developed closed-loop cooling systems allow cooling fluid, sealed in a circuit, to absorb the heat from electric equipment and turn the fluid into vapor before it is condensed back into liquid.

For Dallas-based Skybox Datacenters, using a closed-loop system means its average data center uses less water than five typical households, said Haynes Strader, Skybox’s chief development officer.

Much of the nearly five-hour public meeting discussed water concerns and consumption from data centers, despite it not being a part of the agenda.

Before the 2027 legislative session, the state Senate Business and Commerce Committee is charged with recommending ways to balance the economic benefits of the data centers boom with impacts on landowners, private property rights, water infrastructure and community integrity.

Thursday’s meeting also represented a check-in for developers on the implementation of a new law regulating data centers as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the state’s grid operator, works to select the first “batch” of large-load projects that will go to the head of a long line for interconnection with the grid.

The new law, Senate Bill 6, applies to electricity customers using at least 75 megawatts, or the amount of a medium-sized power plant. The wide-ranging state legislation seeks to govern the growing number of data centers being planned and built out across the state, with Texas now set to surpass Virginia—the jurisdiction with the most data centers in the world—in new data center construction.

Where to find a Texas Roadway Map

When visiting different states I always like to pick up the free road map (usually an official DOT map) that they give out at welcome centers off the interstates when you cross into the border Unfortunately I drove into Texas too late and the I10 center was closed. Does anyone know of a similar travel info center elsewhere that would give out (or even sell) those maps? I'll be visiting Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and places in between over the course of the next week, so I have some flexibility on where I could go to find one. Thanks!

Texas boost Bible passages in required book list: here are the excerpts that could mandatory in schools

Hey! Reporter here with an update on where the Texas required reading list stands. The Republican-led State Board of Education greenlit a shortened version of the original list by a 9-5 vote on Friday.

The list removed ~100 titles to make it easier to teach, but boosted the number of direct Bible passages from 10 to 14. Some of the passages were also shuffled between grades. The Bible stories, meanwhile, were swapped out but remain at three.

That means there is now a Bible story or passage for every grade from 1 to 12. These changes are likely to go into effect during the 2030-2031 school year.

You can check out my full story here: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas/article/school-reading-list-bible-22081914.php

Judge rules to temporarily block Texas’ smokeable hemp ban

A Travis County district judge has temporarily lifted a statewide ban on the sale of natural smokeable hemp products, such as flower buds and rolled joints, until at least April 24.

Judge Maya Guerra Gamble granted the Texas Hemp Business Council, Hemp Industry & Farmers of America, and several Texas-based dispensaries and manufacturers a temporary restraining order against new testing requirements that creates 0.3% total THC threshold, effectively eliminating smokeable products. Lawyers for the hemp industry argued that the agencies have overstepped their constitutional authority by rewriting the statutory definitions of hemp established by lawmakers in 2019.

The concept of the new total THC testing came from the federal government, which clarified the definition of hemp in November as containing a total THC concentration of less than 0.3% on a dry weight basis rather than only delta-9 THC, according to Zachary Berg, an attorney with the Texas Attorney General’s Office who represented Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission on Friday. Berg added that the federal government’s new definition doesn’t go into effect until November, but the state wanted to be in compliance early with federal law.

The hemp businesses also asked for a temporary injunction on other rules that increase licensing fees for retailers and manufacturers and prevent businesses from selling smokeable hemp out-of-state. Guerra Gamble also temporarily unblocked interstate sales, but she deferred the topic of licensing fees to the next hearing on April 24.

Why is soup (menudo) so expensive at Mexican restaurants?

I’ve been so curious about this for awhile, hoping someone here can lend some insight..

I love our Mexican and Tex-mex cuisine so freaking much, but one thing that puzzles me is why Menudo or chicken-tortilla soup is usually so expensive compared to everything else on the menu. I feel like there’s so many places that’ll have a 3 enchilada plate with rice and beans for like $12 or $14 bucks, and a bowl of menudo is like $16.

Don’t they just have a huge pot of it in the back that they prep early, let simmer all day, and serve till it runs out?

When I’ve travelled in South America lots of places offer an El Menu De Dia that has a small bowl of soup, rice and beans, and a daily entree. The soup is included on the side in the same way you’d see Miso sometimes offered for free at some Asian places.

If I could get a little side bowl of soup for like 3-4 bucks I’d get it every time, feels like they’re leaving a lot of money on the table?

Good spots to meet people?

I’m a 29M, Indian, living and working in Greenville Downtown. I’ve been single for almost a couple of years now. Good career, a dog and have a whole bunch of hobbies. I’m currently on a sober break and hence, bars aren’t an option.

What are some spots where I can genuinely meet someone? I don’t go in with the only intention of finding a date but it’s definitely one of the goals. I’m a social butterfly and can have a conversation with almost anyone (I enjoy that).

Bridge / cliff jumping spots around?

For the avoidance of doubt, this is an inquiry for FUN jumping not the other kind.

New to the area and want to find a spot to do backflips this summer and scratch the adrenaline itch.

Anyone know of any hidden gems?

Cardiologist recommendation

We‘re coming to some long-awaited conclusions with my health and my heart did some funny things at my primary care office today that earned me a referral to cardiology. I will definitely look into their referral, but also crowd-sourcing a bit just in case. I really would love a doctor who is curious and willing to sit through the muck of rigorous testing before throwing treatments at the wall to see what sticks. I’ve had specialists in the past who did that and it’s demoralizing. so, if you’ve had an experience with a cardiologist in our area who actually cared about finding what was causing your symptoms I’d love to hear about it.

Grandview Drive Lowes Lost Tools

Grandview Drive Lowes Lost Tools

Hey all, this video is from the back of my brother’s truck today. His work tools fell out of his truck bed, quite a pricey amount of them. He quickly went back to the intersection to try to recover them and they were already gone. Lowe’s camera footage shows the white SUV that picked them up, they haven’t been turned in anywhere and to be totally honest my brother is absolutely devastated.

My brother has had the hardest year of his life this past year, without going into too much detail his wife went through the most awful postpartum a new mom could go through and my brother had to carry her through it with stints of truly solo parenting a new infant. They are finally just now getting back to a somewhat normal life with their one-year-old and finally some sense of calm for the first time in a year.

I’m hoping this post finds whoever got the tools, I understand picking them up and honestly probably feeling like you hit the jackpot. If there’s any chance of recovering the tools I would be so appreciative. Happy to meet wherever for pickup.

Thanks yall

Bosch E-bike Battery service

Hi all, does anyone know of a bike shop that can troubleshoot a Bosch e-bike battery that won’t charge? I’ve been told Benchmark in Greer might but I’d really love to not drive all the way to Greer if I don’t have to.

Saturday Morning Political Cartoon Thread

It's Saturday, folks. Let's all kick back with a cup of coffee and share some cartoons!

Feel free to share political cartoons in this thread. Besides our usual civility policy, there are three rules to follow:

  1. Every top-level comment must contain a political cartoon. This means no text-only top-level comments.

  2. It must be an original cartoon. This means no photographs, no edited cartoons, no AI generated images, no templates, no memes and no image macros. OC is allowed, as is animation.

  3. Each top-level comment should only have a maximum of 3 cartoons.

That's all. Enjoy your weekend!
